About Melanie Barrett
Melanie Barrett is the current Vice Mayor of the Town of Oro Valley, a position she has held for the past 8 years. She is currently running for Mayor of Oro Valley.
She grew up visiting Oro Valley because her cousins lived here and graduated from CDO high school. As an adult, she had this beautiful area near the top of potential places to live, and was thrilled when her husband got a job at Raytheon and she was able to make her home here with her family. She has 4 children from ages 9 to 20, and has lived in Oro Valley for 17 years, looking forward to many more.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Melanie graduated with her law degree from Brigham Young University in 2007, where she served on the law review. She graduated at the top of her class, magna cum laude. She lived two years in Tennessee where she passed the bar before moving to Oro Valley, Arizona. While here, she joined the Oro Valley Planning and Zoning Commission to volunteer in her community. She served 2 terms on the commission, including as the Vice Chair of the commission. While there she worked extensively on the Your Voice, Our Future General Plan that is currently being implemented.
On Planning and Zoning, she was saddened to discover that large groups of residents were being largely ignored by a developer funded Town Council, so she ran for Council in 2018 along with current Mayor Joe Winfield and Councilmembers Joyce Jones-Ivey and Josh Nicolson.
No developer donations
Melanie Barrett does not accept developer donations and never has, and has always run a self and resident funded campaign so she can best represent you, the citizens of Oro Valley.
On Council she was selected 8 times by her fellow councilmembers as the Vice Mayor, and ran successfully for re-election in 2022. In both elections she received the most votes for the council.
She works hard to represent Oro Valley Citizens
Vice Mayor Barrett has worked hard to consistently ask questions, research, and represent the Citizens of Oro Valley. She has successfully fulfilled her campaign promises along with the Council to solve the golf financial losses, bring more parks and recreation to all citizens, fund and support police, and keep development moderate and in the interests of existing citizens. Under her tenure the Town’s bond rating has increased two levels to AA+. She has worked on the next 10 year General Plan, and looks forward to working to implement it as your Mayor.
